Four suspects were in custody on Sunday night in connection with the murder of two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete, with Eastern Cape police saying more arrests were expected.
Five people have been arrested since Tete was shot dead outside his Mdantsane home on Friday evening. His 27-year-old female passenger was wounded in the shooting and remains in hospital.
One of those arrested, a 30-year-old man, has since been released after questioning and is now considered a potential witness, provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said.
The man was arrested in KuGompo City on Saturday alongside a 22-year-old suspect, who has since been formally charged with Tete’s murder.
The 22-year-old is expected to appear in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Police made the first two arrests less than 24 hours after Tete was killed.
On Sunday, three more suspects — two aged 27 and one aged 28 — were arrested in Mdantsane and Scenery Park.
Gantana said the three were also expected to appear in court.
“More arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds, and police are continuing to follow up on leads.
“Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details at this time.
“The SAPS commends the investigating team for their diligence and swift action in ensuring the apprehension of the suspects,” Gantana said.
This is a developing story.
